Membership

Why should I join?

Whether you’ve barely threaded a needle, been away from sewing for some time, or have your fair share (nay, closets full) of your custom creations, everyone will find inspiration here.  Enthusiasm is contagious!  We speak your language and won’t judge your overflowing stash of fabrics (in fact, we'll be eager to swap with you!)

Sewing is a life skill to be learned, cherished, and passed on.  We value the practical and aesthetic qualities of this art and aim to share them with our community and the next generation.

Membership Benefits

An ASG membership has benefits built-in on multiple levels.  The greatest benefit of membership is that you’ll be part of a community of sewing enthusiasts.

As an Individual, members enjoy…

Discounts to local sewing shops.  How much do you spend on fabric and notions each year?  Would a 10% (or more) discount help your sewing budget?  Be sure to visit:

  • Electric Needle -  6612 Odana Road  (608) 831-3770
15% off notions and accessories

  • M&R Sewing - 6115 Odana Road   (608) 278-4242
  20% off non-sale items

  • Nancy’s Notions and other online retailers.

The best resource for national retailer discounts is the membership section at asg.org

A map of area shops can be found here.

Within our Local Chapter you'll find..

A circle of local sewing friends who have been there, stitched that, and some who could benefit from your unique experiences.

Monthly meetings, each with a new theme.
  • From 2016 to 2018, we welcomed 28 different guest presenters to share their stories and expertise!  Some represent local sewing-related small businesses and some are our own talented members.  We were fortunate enough to bring in nationally recognized speaker Sandra Betzina October of 2015 and Pamela Leggett in October of 2016.

  • In 2019, we featured an entire year of local talent!  The Madison area has an impressive line-up of sewists and fiber artists!  View summaries from our meetings.

  • Along with great speakers, we find time to visit local sewing shops or theaters as a group and rotate in these member-favorite meetings:
    • January, Charity Sewing - We stay in touch with our community by giving back to local groups.
    • February, Super Show and Tell -  A meeting solely dedicated to sharing our projects
    • Schoolhouse - We share our hidden talents in a rotation of small group forums.
    • Summer, Feast and Forage - Purge your stash and take home something awesome from a friend.
    • December, Annual Holiday Party - Complete with a sewn gift exchange between members.

Connections to local instructors.  Is your sewing machine way overdue for a cleaning?  Learn how to do it yourself!  Are you stuck on a special project and could use some guidance?  Attend the Open Sewing lab!  Check our newsletter for the latest in local class offerings.

Stitchin Times, our chapter’s award-winning monthly newsletter, keeps us up to date on all of these happenings.

On a National level...

A plethora of free online sewing tutorials!  At last count, there were over 120 videos, each about an hour long, taking you from design to fruition and detailing every step along the way.

Do you like to travel?  Attend a meeting anywhere in the states while you’re away, or visit their shops with your discount for a yard of souvenir material.  If you love to travel, consider the annual ASG conference or annual Sew Much Fun excursion to a new scenic place somewhere in the world.

There’s also an opportunity to subscribe to Threads, a more in-depth apparel-sewing focused magazine, at a discounted rate.
