Why Should I Join?
Whether you’ve barely threaded a needle, been away from sewing for some time, or have your fair share (nay, closets full) of your custom creations, everyone will find inspiration here. Enthusiasm is contagious! We speak your language and won’t judge your overflowing stash of fabrics (in fact, we'll be eager to swap with you!)
Sewing is a life skill to be learned, cherished, and passed on. We value the practical and aesthetic qualities of this art and aim to share them with our community and the next generation.
Membership Benefits: An ASG membership has benefits built in on multiple levels. The greatest benefit of membership is that you will be part of a community of sewing enthusiasts.
As an individual, members enjoy...
Discounts to local sewing shops, plus classes on a wide range of sewing and quilting topics. How much do you spend on fabric and notions each year? Would a 10% (or more) discount help your sewing budget? Be sure to visit:
The best resource for national retailer discounts is the membership section at asg.org (must be an ASG member to view these discounts)
Within our local chapter, you'll find...
A circle of local sewing friends who have been there, stitched that, and some who could benefit from your unique experiences.
Monthly meetings, each with a new theme.
On a national level...
A plethora of free online sewing tutorials! At last count, there were over 120 videos, each about an hour long, taking you from design to fruition and detailing every step along the way.
Do you like to travel? Attend a meeting anywhere in the United States while you are away, or visit their shops with your discount for a yard of souvenir material. If you love to travel, consider the annual ASG conference or annual Sew Much Fun excursion to a new scenic place somewhere in the world.
There’s also an opportunity to subscribe to Threads, a more in-depth apparel-sewing focused magazine, at a discounted rate.

Have you ever forgotten to renew your ASG membership before it expired? You received an email reminder well in advance and you thought you had plenty of time to renew and then, the first thing you knew, three months had passed and you were no longer eligible for the $5 discount on your renewal. You will now pay the full annual fee. How can you avoid that? It’s easy! Next time your renewal date approaches, sign up for auto-renewal. Sign in to your account Information online, click on Renew Membership, and choose the Auto Renewal Option. You will pay as you would for a regular one-year renewal, print a membership card, and be all set! Thirty days prior to your next year’s renewal date, you will receive an email informing you that your membership will auto-renew on your renewal date in plenty of time to opt out if you choose to do so. You won’t have to worry about missing out on the $5 discount nor about not being able to opt out if that's what you choose to do. It’s really the smartest way to avoid missing out on the discount or risking a lost-in-the-mail check. Give it a try - it will be one less thing to worry about!

- Every year we welcome different guest presenters to share their stories and expertise! We have been fortunate enough to bring in nationally recognized speakers, such as Bob Purcell from YLI Threads and Jennifer Simonic from Loose Ends, to speak to us on a wide range of sewing subjects.
- Our meetings can also feature local talent! The Madison area has an impressive line-up of sewists and fiber artists who share their areas of expertise with us! Topics have ranged from liturgical vestments, custom alterations to pants, remaking special-occasion garments (like wedding dresses), and useful organizational hints and software.
- Along with great speakers, we find time to visit local sewing shops or theaters as a group and rotate in these member-favorite meetings:
- Charity Sewing - We stay in touch with our community by giving back to local groups.
- Super Show and Tell - A meeting solely dedicated to sharing our projects.
- Feast and Forage - A biannual event when you can purge your stash and take home something awesome from a friend.
- Annual Holiday Party (December) - Complete with a gift exchange between members.
