Community Sewing 2022 - Project Linus

Each January, the guild traditionally gathers to do a group project. Past endeavors have included bags for Days for Girls, port pillows for Carbone Cancer Center, fidget quilt bases and many more!

This year, we're sewing quilts for Project Linus. They give blankets to kids in hospital, shelters, and last fall sent 400 to Ft McCoy for refugees.

New to quilting? Don't tune out yet - YOU'VE GOT THIS!!

  • This pattern is beginner-friendly!
  • Experienced quilters of MASG are available to help!
  •  We provide all the fabric and batting you'll need!
Supplies
MASG members can pick up a kit.

The kits have backing, batting and four half yard cuts of cotton to make a 36”x45” kid’s throw quilt.

You can add or substitute any fabric you’d like (or not use our kits at all if you have stuff in your stash!) The fabrics should be appropriate for juveniles but don’t have to be babyish, teens get them too!  No holiday or religious prints.

We have 5 places available for porch pickup:

getting started
Lorraine provided a great Quilting for Beginners tutorial, which you can refer back to any time!  Her instructions will give you a solid foundation that is more than enough to help you make a lovely quilt.

Project Linus Madison coordinator, and fellow MASG member, Eileen, has additional support to offer:

  • Use this opportunity to HAVE FUN! There are NO quilt show judges here!
  • Your quilt provides "a hug" to a child and they will cherish it, no matter what "mistakes" you see!
  • Try to keep your project away from your furry family members (the recipient may have allergies.)

Also ASG had a recent blog post on quilting - did you read it?
Quilting the layers together
Time to pin the layers together and get ready for the quilting part. Lorraine talks about free-motion quilting (this is the perfect project to test the waters with that skill!), using a walking foot, OR hand sewing the layers together.  Sashiko, anyone?  Or, consider the traditional method of hand-tying.

Not feeling up to it?
If quilting isn't going well, or is the one thing that would keep you from doing the project... REACH OUT TO US!  We have quilting veterans lined up to give you a hand.

binding the edges
Lorraine includes multiple finishing methods in her tutorial. The kits include enough material for the top, quilt batting (the middle layer), and a large piece for the backing.  There is not a specific fabric set aside for the binding, so you can choose to:

  • Piece together your scraps/cut-offs from the top fabric into long strips (this can look very cool!)
  • If the backing fabric is large enough, you can wrap it over the edges.
  • Supplement with something from your stash.
  • Ask for an additional piece of fabric from your pick-up person.
  • Hand the pinned/quilted quilt back to your pick-up person, for assistance finishing it.

celebrate!
Well done!  Thank you for accepting the challenge of making a quilt for a very deserving child.

Take pictures to document your success and bring your quilt back to your pick up location by May 2022.  We hope to have an outdoor airing of the quilts when it gets warm - we're excited to include your hard work!
